FINAL ESSAY
For the finals on Friday, I did not feel so good about the essay. Having little time I felt that I was being pressured. Maybe I just need to practice more in writing an essay under a short time. I don't know. But I didn't like how my essay turned out so I decided to rewrite it.

Emerson once said “Trust Thyself.” He refers to the self-motivational mindset that tells one to hearken to their instincts, mind and heart. Emerson’s ‘’Self-Reliance” portrays the qualities of a poet, to do what you want to do. The poet, Rushdie, elucidates in his quote on what portrays a poet, one who is imperil, one who points at frauds, starts feuds and one who transforms the world and stops it from being stolid.

In Rushdies quote, the main theme of it, is to be imperial, to take risks, to do the unimpossible, possible. To challenge yourself in shaping this world from being stolid. The tone of this quote is confidence. To take a challenge, risks,  takes a lot of confidence.

In addition, taking a risk takes a lot of confidence. One can either agree or disagree towards your thoughts and opinions. Which can create a backlash. But as poets we have the right to speak for ourselves. We have the right to speak out on our minds. For instance, in “The Right to you Opinion’’ it discusses how no-one has the right to stop us from thinking and saying whatever we want. As poets we have different ideas and it takes confidence to share those ideas that may lead you at risk. As poets we want to share our ideas and grab their attention to the important things. For instance, in “A Modest Proposal,” by Jonathan Swift. Swift advises that eating children and selling them in markets as food is a solution to aiding the Irish in their economic problems. Clearly, he was trying to grab the audience attention, that there is a big problem in Ireland. That there is a prodigious amount of children starving in their country and that no one is aware of this crisis.......

 REVIEW/NOTES
Stuff we read:

  • "The Laughing Heart" By Charles Bukowski
  1. Be optimistic and find the good in every situation
  2. Be happy and stay positive, seeing the glass half full than half empty, to find the light in all darkness
  3. To accept the unexpected situations and use it as a learning experience.
  • "The Right To Your Opinion" By Jamie Whyte
  1. Whyte enlisted the many ways in which one misuses the phrase "the right to your opinion" this shows that a person wrongfully has believed the idea that their opinion is true. "The Right To Your Opinion" shows that when a person is told that they have a right and they try to pursue it, then get denied it has then violated their rights. "The Right To Your Opinion" is a misleading statement because you are not necessary guaranteed that you are able to do certain things.
  2. Argumentation-search for truth
  3. Euphemism- to make someone seem distasteful.
  4. Entitlement- obligation
  • "A Modest Proposal" By Jonathon Swift
  1. Meets the criteria of a satire. Swift advises that eating children and selling them in markets as food is a solution to aiding the Irish in their economic problems. He is clearly saying that people should be aware that there is a prodigious amount of children starving in their country and that no one is aware of this crisis.
  • "Conscience Of A Hacker" AKA The Hacker's Manifesto
  1. All adults criticize us and sees us all alike.
  2. Commit errors because we are all alike.
  3. No one can stop us from being alike.
  • "Politics and The English Language" By George Orwell
  1.  language is "ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts.”  he is clearly trying to say that we make many awful mistakes when writing and are habits of using language is easy for us to make foolish thoughts.
  • "Self-Reliance" By Ralph Waldo Emerson
  1. Trust Thyself
  2. https://www.mindmeister.com/778560104
  • "A Sound of Thunder"
  • "Immigrants in our own land"
  1. Expectation vs Reality
  2. Prison
  3. The land of opportunity
  • Ethos, Logos and Pathos
  1. Ethos- speakers credibility, persuade audience by reason Ex: formal dress, the way one speaks, "As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely generate the best results."
  2. Logos - Logic, using text or rhetoric Ex:"History has shown time and again that absolute power corrupts absolutely."
  3. Pathos- an appeal to emotion, have an emotional response Ex: "You should consider another route. I heard that that street is far more dangerous and ominous at night than during the daytime."
  • Extrinsic vs Intrinsic
  1. Extrinsic- to do things you don't want to do, in which people reward you for it. Motivation from the outside.
  2. Intrinsic- to do things you want to do. Motivation in the inside.
  • Logical Fallacies
  1. Ad Hominem- attacking a person instead of their argument Ex: how can you say you are raw vegan when your eating cooked vegetables
  2. Straw man- "misrepresents a position to make it seem weaker than it is"
  3. Red Herring- something intended to be misleading, distraction from what is truly important Ex: "When someone changes the subject in an attempt of avoiding the question."
  4. Post hoc ergo proper hoc- after this, therefore results to this...
  5. Slippery Slope- a person asserts that some event must inevitably follow from another without any argument for the inevitability of the event in question. Ex: legalizing gay marriage in California can lead to other states like Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky  to legalize gay marriage.
  • Taboo Language -  words or phrases that are to not be acceptable in society
  1. Bad Words- F**k, B***h
  2. Catharsis- the process of releasing emotions
  3. Syllogism- A simple form of logic, finding truth or validity
  • Satire- the use of irony, humor, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices.
  • Denotation vs Connotation
  1. Denotation- literal meaning of a word Ex: It's so fresh outside
  2. Connotation- socially popular meaning of the word

SOMETHING INTERESTING
There was three minutes until the final bell rings. As I rushed to class, and as I passed by the 600s, you know how there's a fence behind the 600s. Well, I saw two teens who were dressed with a long white tee, probably an XL and really baggy shorts that look like pants, with long socks and converse. They were probably gangsters or as I like to call them the wanna be gangsters. I saw them jump the fence. One of them almost got their  shorts stuck, it was kinda funny. Well, as I was rushing to class I wondered, how would it be to not care about school? How does it not hurt them to miss school? ...

Who Understands Me But Me By Jimmy Santiago Baca

They turn the water off, so I live without water,
they build walls higher, so I live without treetops,
they paint the windows black, so I live without sunshine,
they lock my cage, so I live without going anywhere,
they take each last tear I have, I live without tears,
they take my heart and rip it open, I live without heart,
they take my life and crush it, so I live without a future,
they say I am beastly and fiendish, so I have no friends,
they stop up each hope, so I have no passage out of hell,
they give me pain, so I live with pain,
they give me hate, so I live with my hate,
they have changed me, and I am not the same man,
they give me no shower, so I live with my smell,
they separate me from my brothers, so I live without brothers,
who understands me when I say this is beautiful?
who understands me when I say I have found other freedoms?

I cannot fly or make something appear in my hand,
I cannot make the heavens open or the earth tremble,
I can live with myself, and I am amazed at myself, my love,
my beauty,
I am taken by my failures, astounded by my fears,
I am stubborn and childish,
in the midst of this wreckage of life they incurred,
I practice being myself,
and I have found parts of myself never dreamed of by me,
they were goaded out from under rocks in my heart
when the walls were built higher,
when the water was turned off and the windows painted black.
I followed these signs
like an old tracker and followed the tracks deep into myself,
followed the blood-spotted path,
deeper into dangerous regions, and found so many parts of myself,
who taught me water is not everything,
and gave me new eyes to see through walls,
and when they spoke, sunlight came out of their mouths,
and I was laughing at me with them,
we laughed like children and made pacts to always be loyal,
who understands me when I say this is beautiful?

After reading "Immigrants in our own land," another poem that I found interesting by Jimmy Santiago Baca is "Who understands me but me. " I found this poem interesting because he is sending us a message to the readers, that you should not let others judge you but to look inside and judge yourself.

IMMIGRANTS IN OUR OWN LAND

Impression: My overall impression of this poem is that immigrants seek for a better life, for the land of opportunity but in the end those dreams that they seeked for it just turns out to nothing.

Theme: I agree with Jessica Parra that the theme of this poem is expectation vs reality. Immigrants believe that America is the land of opportunity. The land where their dreams will be fulfilled. A place for a better life. But in reality, once they arrive to this new world their expectation turns out to nothing.

Tone: Jimmy Santiago Baca sets the tone in a depressing way. How immigrants carry on a dream at first but in the end their dreams crush.

MY MAD DREAM OF AN ESSAY
Remember that time you ate that spicy chicken just before you went to bed on the night before the big wedding? Oh, that weird dream you had about the 2016 presidential election. When you woke up you couldn't quite remember the frightening details, but after reading 'Self-Reliance" and "A Sound of Thunder"it's all coming back to you now.

The dream started badly. You were in line with your family at a zoo waiting to be sent to jail. Everywhere you looked there were posters of president-elect yo-mama, looking like a crazy monkey who could eat a whole man. Suddenly, there was Ralph Waldo Emerson telling you, "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself." You realized that you have something to contribute to the world so you decided to stroll. But it wasn't easy. First you had to put on a fancy dress and shoes and then you had to make a bike to back in time to the time square so you could convince people to learn about the candidates and the social issues.

But right there in the times square there was a giant gorilla and it started screaming at everyone. People started to run. You grabbed a car from a nearby light post and yelled "Do what you want, not what others want." Everyone stopped and listened, so you kept going.
VIGNETTE
Music is a feeling you can't see it but you can hear it. There are different types of music jazz, rap, rock, indie etc. Just the feeling of music sets your mood . It sets you to a different world. Music is vocal and instruments or just both, are combined in such a way that produces beauty in such a form. It brings harmony and expresses emotion.

EMERSON'S CHILD
Shell shocking is one word to describe the presidential election. How could an awful human being who calls Mexicans rapists and Muslims terrorists be elected as our president of the United States. Well, he won and there is nothing we can do about it. He will represent America for the next four years, whether we like it or not, he will be our president. During the election, many Americans were excited for he was going to win, while others cringed as states would turn red. After hours of waiting for who will become the next president of the United States, Republican Donald Trump claimed victory over Democratic presidential Hillary Clinton. As many celebrated many cried, angry and scared. What will happen next? How did he win? This is impossible, it must be rigged. There is way in hell this clown won. But how when he clashed many with awful comment, shouldn't he be hated than liked. Well all of the hate led him to this success. Donald Trump used Emerson's Self Reliance. Emerson said "Be yourself" and that’s exactly what Mr. Trump did. He spoke with no intention what so ever. He spoke with no thought of what society thinks. He was himself. As individuals, I think Emerson would want us to be ourselves. In order to succeed in life we must do things our way. Just like Mr. Trump. Many are shell shocked due to the shown results. Many are furious and upset while others are jumping up and down. I know my community is very upset, angry and sell shocked. I think that Emerson would want us to move on. Emerson said "Society is a wave. The wave moves onward, but the water of which it is composed does not." Emerson would want us as a community to change and move onward. Our views of Trump may remain the same but we as a community should move forward. We must be opened minded and change as a community. There is a tremendous division between Republicans and Democrats, which creates a lot of tensions in this country. And as a country I think Emerson would want us to set aside the political differences and unite as one for there shall be no destruction in this country. Still remain free for what this country is known for. We should move on accept the fact that Trump will be our president for the next four years or maybe eight years, who knows. I mean he did win this election. Ultimately, we should be self-reliant as told by Emerson. To do what we as individuals want to do. To be ourselves

AN EARTH SHATTERING FART
"A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury was an interesting short story. I liked the fact that the story included dinosaurs. I love dinosaurs, they're amazing. Its based on time traveling and sort of reminded me of Jurassic Park. I freaking love that movie. The story is about a guy who paid thousands of dollars to go back in time and kill a dinosaur. But you must follow the rules, you cannot step out of the path for you will be killed. And that's exactly what Eckels did. He stepped out of the path in which they told him not too and stepped on a butterfly. And once they arrived back the time period changed and Eckels was killed.
Emerson Presentation Day 4
My Emerson
For the project, I will be doing it as a group with kissel and Eldrin. We will each provide a quote that we think about emerson that we found interesting. And whether we agree or disagree with him. And we will provide our project in a poster but we will each have a way in which we would like to write it.

EMERSON FOR THE YOUNG BUCK
Hey there young fella, have you heard of a guy named Emerson. Well he's an awesome person. And have you heard of his famous essay called "Self Reliance." Your probably thinking who the heck is this person? and is he someone famous? Well Emerson is a person who writes essays and is a poet, in which he is famous for. Well he wrote this essay about being yourself; that you should trust yourself and do whatever you want whenever you want. Do not follow the crowd, do what you feel is right for you and not what your friends do. Today many young folks are trying to be like each other so they can fit in. Many young folks tend to follow the trend, like the juju dance and wearing brand clothing's, just to fit in. But then we will all end up being the same. And wouldn't that just be boring. Wouldn't you like to be different; to be yourself. Do what makes you happy not what others want you to be. It's better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not. Be yourself.

EMERSON SAID IT
"Nothing can bring you peace but yourself"
This quote is probably one of Emerson's powerful quotes. Emerson gives this idea of individuality. Who else can bring peace in our life but ourselves. We human beings are the ones who can bring peace, beauty, and harmony into this world; this life. This came up on the Socratic seminar because we discussed Emerson's idea of being self reliant; being thyself. To believe in yourself.

"Every heart vibrates to the iron string" In this quote Emerson claims that as human beings we should listen to our instincts. To trust your own feelings, to do what you desire to do. We tend to do what society pressures us to do than to be different. yet we tend to be like everybody else. We need to be ourselves and show who we truly are.

"Meantime nature is not slow to equip us in the prison-uniform of the party to which we adhere"
In this quote Emerson is addressing that we humans are like prisoners to society. Prisoners are to follow orders, just how society pressures us to do certain things.

"We but have express ourselves, and we are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents." In this quote Emerson states that we have a hard time showing what we truly are. And we tend to do what society pressures us to do. The fact that we are too terrified to show our uniqueness to the world.

"To be great is to be misunderstood''
In this quote Emerson means that to be misunderstood is great. To believe in what you want to believe is great, even though some may disagree.

I'M SELF RELIANT

AUTHOR IN PROGRESS
After dissecting into Emerson's "Self Reliance" for like a week or more, I felt that that I did great but I felt that I could have done better. I felt that if I were to do a prewrite, it would have helped me to stay more organized and make my writing more sense, instead of just jumping into the questions. What I felt that I did well on the test was reversing the questions and using it to answer it.

Contibution to the MindMap
First I added quotes that I found intruiging. And defined it the way I saw it. And then I started to define some terms, to help those who needed a better understanding. And then I thought to myself what is the Emersons theme of self relience. I know its shown on the title but I wanted to know what others thought of what the theme was interpreted to them.  So I added Theme to the mind map.

MY AMERICAN VOICE
A huge component is knowing what to say. People often hold back and say nothing, when it really needs to be said. It could be when someone weak is being bullied or abused by someone strong, someone taking out their temper on another, when someone is cheating in a relationship or school, or someone is just being barbarous. Many people are afraid to speak up, they don't want to look foolish in front of many. Many think that hiding their voice is a wize decision to avoid a conflict, but it's not.
I for one think that speaking up is important, it's the right decision. Being silent won't help in the situation. It takes courage and responsibility to speak up. Many should speak up during a situation, be more than a bystander. Speaking up creates a major difference. In situations like someone being bullied, unkind, hot headed to someone, I speak up. I may look like a quiet person but when it comes to this i'm a whole different person. When I speak up I show anger. Ultimetely, speaking up is important than having to sit back and be silent when something needs to be told.

TEAM VOCAB
When it comes to the elections of this year many people can anticipate these two candidates to surely accuse each other from doings of the past. Each canadate tries to remain stolid but Hilary definitely outbeats trump. It's aggravating because trump and Hilary are constantly sticking their proboscis into everyone's business and venomously attacking each other. With each debate America is left suspended to watch the next one just to see the two yell at each other. Both Candidates try to hypnotize the world into thinking their fit to be president trying to prove that they can transform this world into something greater, but they simply just illuminate each other's faults.

TODAY I'M A GOOD HUMAN
Today, I helped out at the Special Olympics North Divisional Games. I helped pack 500 lunches for the 500 players. I love volunteering. I don't just do it because it makes it look good on my resume. I do it because I enjoy reaching out to my community. I love seeing those friendly faces. And I like it when they say thank you.  It makes me feel good inside, it makes me feel like a good human being. It keeps me away from all the stress, especially APUSH. I especially love meeting new people and making friends. I love volunteering.

Literature Analysis #2

1. For my second literature analysis I decided to read "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher. When reading the short summary on the back cover of the book, I found it intriguing. I wanted to know what led Hannah Baker to commit suicide. I wanted to know more about her. Reading through the book, I thought that Clay Jenson (Narrator) was the reason why Hannah Baker committed suicide but it turns out he wasn't. Then why was he one of them to receive the tape?

2. What kept me reading more and more, was the short stories told by Hannah Baker about the people that caused he to commit suicide. Its interesting how all these people did wrong to Hannah without them even noticing it. Which hugely impacted her life and completely destroyed it. Sadly leading to her death.

3 Being assigned to read a book can take about a week or more or less. It depends the time you have. I know I can't finish a book in a week cause I have too much on my plate. But I kinda started to learn how to manage time. when  I come home, instead of watching television I read "Thirteen Reasons Why" cause I tell myself reading is almost like television. I vision the scenes in my head.

Essay 1 Revised
After reading my colleagues work and sharing ideas, I realized I could improve my essay by including more examples and check my grammar. I'm proud of the result. Hope you enjoy reading it!

Do you believe that a complete connection between people is more significant than an utterly love for one's country? I agree with E.M Fosters view that personal relations  are more significant than patriotism. Personal Relations is referred to as an immediate connection between family, friends, and partnerships. Family, the idea of family is a high priority; family comes first. Families are always there for you through thick and thin. Families always embrace their love for you. They are the individuals who have known you since the day you've laid your eyes upon this place we call earth. Friends, they are the ones who have know you for a long period of time. A friend is someone who you can talk to about a situation, they are the individuals you can trust and tell your deepest darkest secrets and they are always there to lend a hand. Partnerships, they are the romantic partners who are exceedingly close to you. Partnerships create this special bond of mutual affection. It's important to retain a personal relations, studies show that retaining a personal relation is healthy for one. Personal relation creates a long life span for one and it helps those dealing with stress. On the other hand, without a personal relation it can lead to a detrimental to your health and can lead to depression. Patriotism is the feeling of love and admiration for a nation. For instance, The Pledge of Allegiance is a showing that you care, admire and love your country. Not only does The Pledge of Allegiance show this great sense of pride but it's also "important" to teach the young in showing their pride for their country and to teach them that it's important to help your country. But one can get too carried away with patriotism leading to great dispute and breaking laws, when in fact they say they are very patriotic. More likely, patriotism can lead to war. I'm not patriotic, why show this sense of pride when "your country" doesn't even show the love and protect you garner from your family. Why stand for your country when it doesn't even stand beside you.  Ultimately, I agree with E.M Foster that personal relations is worldly than patriotism.
MENTOR LETTER DRAFT 1

Dear Christian huygens,
You are a great mentor for my big question. Although it was Galileo that first discovered Mars in a telescope. He did realize that Mars gets closer and more distant, and so larger and smaller in his telescope. But you were the one who did more observation to the planet Mars. You discovered that the planet Mars contained a strange feauture which was later called the Syrtis Major. I think that you will be a terrific person to answer my question about mars and the life of mars.
                                                                Sincerely,
                                                                       Jaqueline

WHEN LOGIC FAILS

1. Argumentum ad hominem
Example: how can you say you are raw vegan when your eating cooked vegetables
2. Argumentum ad antiquitatem
Example: Marriage has always been between a male and a female therefore, gay marriage should be forbidden
3. Argumentum ad ignorantiam
Example: No one has proven that god doesnt exist, therefore he does.
4. Argumentum ad logicam
Example: I have never seen a ghost therefore, ghosts don't exist.
5. Argumentum ad nauseam
Example: Hillary: "Donald supported the invasion of  Iraq"
                     Trump: " Wrong, Wrong, Wrong"
6. Argumentum ad populum
Example: The athletic director should spend on other sports than just football when the football team sucks.
7. Complex question
Example: Have you stopped consuming drugs?
8. Nature, appeal to
Example: pollution is unnatural because us humans dump trash and don't clean up after ourselves.
9. Slippery Slope
Example: legalizing gay marriage in California can lead to other states like Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky  to legalize gay marriage.
10. Tu quoque ('you to")
Example: she accused her of cheating, but she cheated too.

            MISTAKES FOR PRESIDENT

I'm going to be honest I don't understand politics and it's tedious. But watching these two cats fight was kinda interesting. After observing each individually, Trump uses lots of hand gestures while Hillary doesn't. Trump doesn't let anything get in his way. He says what he has to say. And he does lots of funny faces although I don't think he means to. Whereas Hillary she just keeps backfiring Trump constantly. For instance, she declares that "Donald supported the invasion of Iraq" in which Trump keeps denying "Wrong, Wrong" She also uses "racist" to describe Trumps behavior.

IM READING 13 REASONS WHY BY JAY ASHER

SOMETIMES MY MIND...

I was told several times to watch Game of Thrones, but to me it didn't seem to catch my eye, dragons, kings, queens, knights etc. its nothing but fake. So on Saturday I had nothing to do, really I just didn't want to do my home work so it was either to try to watch Game of Thrones or Do Homework. So I gave Game of Thrones a chance. And I regret what I said. I just finished watching season 1 and can't wait to watch the second season but I can only watch Game of Thrones on the weekend. So all I have in mind is whats going to happen on the second season? I can't believe they chopped the head off of Eddard Stark Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North? What is Daenerys Princess of House Targaryen going to do after the loss of her child and husband? Winter is Coming

To answer my big question, my ideal mentor would be someone who knows about space, an Astronomer. Who can tell me more in depth about the planet mars. How mars functions, what the temperature is in mars, does oxygen even exist up there.
